The first edition of "Saturday Night" came from The Sportatorium in Dallas, Texas, with Bill Mercer ringside for all the action.  Mercer opened up the telecast by welcoming the Matchmaker of WSW "Playboy" Gary Hart to ringside.  Hart announced that on this debut edition of "Saturday Night", we would see the crowning of the "Beat the Champ" Television Champion, the most unique title in WSW.  The Television Championship will be defended every week on "Saturday Night" against a random opponent.  Each week that the Champion holds the title, $1,000 is added to the "Beat the Champ" purse.  When someone captures the title, they win the money in the purse as well.  However, if someone holds the title for ten straight weeks, he gets $10,000 and the next shot at the United States Heavyweight Championship, then the title is vacated for two random competitors to face off for the vacant title the following week.  With the explanations given, the action was ready to get underway.

Just prior to the Television Title Tournament finals, "The God of Puroresu" Rikidozan was brought to ringside.  Rikidozan told the fans how happy he was to be in Western States Wrestling and that, while the road to the United States Heavyweight Tournament finals was a tough one, he knew that the finals would involve two other incredible athletes and that he would have to be in top form to claim the U.S. Title and he looked forward to the challenge.

In the finals of the Television Title Tournament, Konnan would defeat "Playboy" Buddy Rose when Konnan locked the Tequila Sunrise to score the submission victory and the Television Championship.  That victory placed a cool grand in the "Beat the Champ" purse and Television Title around Konnan's waist, making him the first champion in Western States Wrestling
